# TempoWeave - weave design software

Information Note - February 15th, 2026:

There will soon be a major release of TempoWeave that we will call TempoWeave Studio.  This version will run on Windows, Mac and Linux.

It has all the same features as in the current TempoWeave that runs on the windows operation system, as well as many new features that have been on the roadmap!

We are testing and building documentation now.  All licensed users of TempoWeave will be able to upgrade to this new release at no charge.  If you'd like to be on the early release list for TempoWeave studio, please contact us at <support@loftyfiber.com>.


# What are the core features of TempoWeave

There are many features in TempoWeave core for Windows.  It's easier to describe the features that are NOT in Core which are in the Pro version:\

TempoWeave Core includes all the features that you need to design a weaving project.  All of the Pro features can be thought of as design features and time savers that automate many of the functions that you would have to do yourself.\
TempoWeave costs $135 USD.  You only need to purchase TempoWeave once and you own it forever.  You may install it on as many computers as you own.  With your initial purchase, you get 1 year of included Pro features.  If you wish to keep the Pro features when the 1 year is up, you will be charged $45 to keep the advanced features.  If you do not wish to keep the Pro features, you can cancel anytime before renewal and you will never be charged again. The TempoWeave Core features will contine to work and you will still get upgrades to any core features.  TempoWeave Core is similar in feature set as Fiberworks Silver.  The Pro features adds additional capability that not everyone will need.\

# Web version of TempoWeave

Yes, TempoWeave is now available via a Cloud based, online format.

It has about 90% of the features available in the desktop version and its intended audience is Mac users where there is currently no desktop version.

We sell TempoWeave for $135 and that includes a 1-year subscription to the Pro features, required for the Cloud based application.&#x20;

You need to maintain the Pro annual subscription for $45/year in order to continue to use the Cloud based version of TempoWeave.

If you decide to purchase TempoWeave and use the Cloud based application, go through the regular purchase process and afterwards, send a message to <tempoweavesupport@loftyfiber.com> and we will get your cloud credentials setup for you.


# TempoWeave EULA

End User License Agreement

END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR LOFTYFIBER SOFTWARETempoWeave® for Windows.

&#x20;

Effective Date: March 2024.

&#x20;

This End-User License Agreement ("EULA") is a legally binding agreement between (i) the entity or organization you represent, or (ii) you individually if no entity is designated ("Licensee"), and LoftyFiber LLC, 415 E 1st Ave, Easley, SC 29640, USA ("LoftyFiber").

&#x20;

This EULA governs the installation and use of the LoftyFiber software identified above ("Software").BY INSTALLING, COPYING, ACCESSING, OR USING THE SOFTWARE, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS EULA, UNDERSTAND IT, AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ITS TERMS. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE, DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE SOFTWARE.1.

&#x20;

DEFINITIONS:

a. "Authorized User" means: (i) you, if you licensed the Software in your individual capacity, or (ii) the named individuals permitted to use the Software within Licensee organization. Licensee is responsible for all acts and omissions of Authorized Users.

&#x20;

b. "Content" means any video, audio, data, music, images, WIF designs, and any other output of the Software, as well as any input provided to the Software.

&#x20;

c. "Device" means a computer hardware system (physical or virtual) capable of running the Software.

&#x20;

d. "Internal Network" means Licensee’s private network, accessible only by Authorized Users, and not open to the public.

&#x20;

e. "Licensee Content" means Content created, uploaded, or processed by Licensee or its Authorized Users using the Software.

&#x20;

f. "Order" means any quotation, addendum, subscription form, or similar document referencing the Software or this EULA that is agreed by LoftyFiber and Licensee.

&#x20;

g. "Resellers and Distributors" means LoftyFiber-authorized partners, merchants, and e-commerce platforms reselling the Software.

&#x20;

h. "Software" means the object-code version of the TempoWeave application, associated media, documentation, and related online services and features made available by LoftyFiber. The Software does not include source code and is licensed for Windows and Mac operating systems only.

&#x20;

1\. GRANT OF LICENSE

&#x20;

1.1 License Grant. Subject to timely payment of applicable fees and continuous compliance with this EULA, LoftyFiber grants Licensee a perpetual, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, limited license to install and use one copy of the Software for one Authorized User.

&#x20;

1.2 Internal Use. The Software may be used solely for Licensee’s internal purposes and not for service bureau use, time-sharing, or providing services to third parties except as expressly permitted in writing by LoftyFiber.

&#x20;

2\. SCOPE OF LICENSED USE

&#x20;

2.1 General and Cross-Platform Use. Licensee may install and run one copy of the Software on Devices owned or controlled by Licensee for use by a single Authorized User, provided that the Software is not used simultaneously on more than one Device by different people.

&#x20;

2.2 Distribution from Server. Licensee may place an image of the Software on an Internal Network for the sole purpose of downloading and installing the Software onto Authorized Users Devices. The total number of Authorized Users may not exceed the number of licenses purchased.

&#x20;

2.3 Server Use. Licensee may install the Software on a server on the Internal Network solely for use by Authorized Users from Devices within the same Internal Network, provided that the total number of Authorized Users does not exceed the number of licenses purchased.

&#x20;

2.4 Secondary Use. Where Licensee’s Order permits multiple Authorized Users, any additional installation allowed hereunder must be used solely for the benefit of the same individual Authorized User and may not increase the total number of Authorized Users beyond those licensed.

&#x20;

2.5 Backup Copy. Licensee may create a reasonable number of backup copies of the Software for archival purposes only. Backup copies may not be installed or used for production.

&#x20;

2.6 Integrity of Third-Party Content. Licensee may not circumvent, disable, or tamper with any digital rights management (DRM), copy protection, watermarking, or other technological protection measures in the Software or in third-party Content.

&#x20;

3\. RESTRICTIONS

&#x20;

3.1 No Reverse Engineering. Licensee may not reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, translate, or attempt to derive the source code of the Software, except to the limited extent expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this restriction.

&#x20;

3.2 No Separation of Components. The Software is licensed as a single product, and its component parts may not be separated for use on more than one Device.

&#x20;

3.3 No Rental or Unauthorized Distribution. Licensee may not rent, lease, lend, sublicense, distribute, or otherwise transfer the Software or any license keys except as expressly permitted in this EULA.

3.4 No Unauthorized Transfers. The Software and this EULA may not be assigned or transferred to any third party without the prior written consent of LoftyFiber. If the Software is licensed under an Order for multiple Authorized Users (such as a site license), Licensee may redeploy an individual seat from one Authorized User to another, provided this does not increase the total number of Authorized Users.

&#x20;

3.5 No Distribution or Sale of Keys. License keys, activation codes, or subscription IDs may not be sold, auctioned, publicly posted, or shared in any way not expressly authorized by LoftyFiber.

&#x20;

4\. LICENSE COMPLIANCE, DATA COLLECTION, AND PRIVACY

&#x20;

4.1 License Compliance and Anti-Piracy. The Software may contain technological measures, including a call-home system, designed to detect piracy and verify that Licensee is using a properly licensed copy. The Software may transmit limited technical information to LoftyFiber or its service providers, such as IP address, Device identifiers, license key information, and installation counts, solely for license management, compliance, and fraud prevention.

&#x20;

4.2 Privacy Policy. All collection and use of personal data by LoftyFiber in connection with the Software is governed by the LoftyFiber Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into this EULA by reference. The Privacy Policy describes categories of data collected, purposes of processing, applicable legal bases, retention periods, data subject rights, and details regarding transfers to third parties or third countries.

&#x20;

4.3 Compliance with Privacy Laws. LoftyFiber will comply with applicable data protection laws, including, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Licensee is responsible for obtaining any necessary consent from its Authorized Users and ensuring that its own use of the Software complies with applicable laws.

&#x20;

4.4 Illegal Copies. LoftyFiber may use monitoring technologies to identify and track illegal copies of the Software. If you are using an unauthorized copy, you may be subject to data collection as described above. LoftyFiber reserves all rights with respect to unlicensed use.

&#x20;

5\. AUTOMATIC UPDATES

&#x20;

5.1 Updates and Upgrades. The Software may automatically connect to LoftyFiber or its service providers to check for and install updates, patches, or improvements. By using the Software, Licensee consents to the receipt and installation of such updates.

&#x20;

5.2 Mandatory Updates. Certain updates may be mandatory if they are required for security, legal compliance, or proper functioning of the Software. If Licensee disables or interferes with such updates, the Software may not function properly and LoftyFiber shall bear no responsibility for resulting issues.

&#x20;

5.3 No Obligation for New Features. LoftyFiber is not obligated to provide future features, major upgrades, or new products as part of this EULA unless specifically provided in an Order or subscription plan.

&#x20;

6\. SUBSCRIPTION TERMS FOR TEMPOWEAVE PRO

&#x20;

6.1 Subscription Service. TempoWeave Pro is offered on a subscription basis. By subscribing, Licensee obtains time-limited access to Pro features identified on the LoftyFiber website or in applicable marketing materials at the time of subscription.

&#x20;

6.2 Billing and Renewal. Subscriptions are billed in advance on a recurring basis (e.g., monthly or annually, as selected by Licensee). Unless Licensee cancels prior to the end of the current billing period, the subscription will automatically renew at the then-current price.

&#x20;

6.3 Cancellation. Licensee may cancel the subscription at any time via the account management options provided by LoftyFiber or its payment processor. Upon cancellation, access to Pro-only features will continue until the end of the current billing period.

&#x20;

6.4 Downgrades. Upon expiration or cancellation of a TempoWeave Pro subscription (other than due to LoftyFiber ceasing business as described in Section 18 below), Licensee’s access will revert to the applicable non-Pro tier, and Pro-only features may be disabled.

&#x20;

6.5 No Refunds for Partial Periods. Except where required by law or expressly stated in an Order, LoftyFiber is not obligated to provide refunds or credits for partial subscription periods, downgrades, or unused services.

&#x20;

7\. CLOUD AND ONLINE SERVICES

&#x20;

7.1 Optional Online Features. The Software may include optional online features, such as cloud storage, content sharing, license syncing, or other hosted services. Use of these features may require an internet connection and the transmission of Licensee Content and technical information to LoftyFiber or third-party providers.

&#x20;

7.2 No Guaranteed Availability. LoftyFiber does not warrant or guarantee any particular level of uptime or availability of online or cloud-based services. LoftyFiber may modify, suspend, or discontinue any online feature or service at any time, with reasonable notice where practicable.

&#x20;

7.3 No Liability for Service Interruptions. LoftyFiber is not responsible for any loss of data, business interruption, or other damages arising from interruptions, failures, or discontinuation of online or cloud-based services, except to the extent such limitation is prohibited by applicable law.

&#x20;

8\. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

&#x20;

8.1 Ownership. This EULA grants Licensee a license to use the Software; it does not transfer ownership. LoftyFiber and its suppliers and licensors retain all right, title, and interest in and to the Software, including all copyrights, patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights, whether registered or unregistered.

8.2 Protection. The Software is protected by U.S. copyright law and international treaties. Licensee shall not remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices on or in the Software.

&#x20;

9\. CONTENT, LICENSEE CONTENT, AND INDEMNITY

&#x20;

9.1 Ownership of Licensee Content. As between the parties, Licensee retains all ownership rights in Licensee Content. LoftyFiber does not claim ownership of such content.

&#x20;

9.2 Responsibility for Licensee Content. Licensee is solely responsible for Licensee Content, including obtaining all necessary rights and permissions, and for complying with all applicable laws regarding such content and its use in the Software.

&#x20;

9.3 Indemnity. Licensee agrees to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless LoftyFiber and its affiliates, officers, employees, agents, suppliers, licensors, Resellers, and Distributors from and against any third-party claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising out of or related to (a) Licensee Content, (b) Licensee’s or an Authorized User’s misuse of the Software, or (c) any violation of this EULA or applicable law by Licensee or an Authorized User.

&#x20;

10\. SHARING FEATURES

&#x20;

10.1 Sharing Feature. The Software may include functionality that enables Licensee to share Licensee Content with other LoftyFiber products or services or with third-party products or services ("Sharing Feature"). By using the Sharing Feature, Licensee grants LoftyFiber a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, transmit, and display Licensee Content solely as necessary to provide the Sharing Feature.

&#x20;

10.2 Access to Licensee Content. LoftyFiber personnel will not access Licensee Content except as reasonably necessary to provide the Sharing Feature, respond to support requests, investigate security or technical issues, comply with legal requirements, or enforce this EULA.

&#x20;

11\. LIMITED WARRANTY

&#x20;

11.1 Limited Warranty. LoftyFiber warrants that the Software will substantially conform to its documentation and be in good working order for a period of three hundred sixty-five (365) days from the date of initial purchase by Licensee. This warranty does not apply if the Software has been altered (except by LoftyFiber), not installed or used in accordance with documentation, or subjected to misuse, negligence, or accident.

&#x20;

11.2 Disclaimer. EXCEPT FOR THE EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY ABOVE AND TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," AND LOFTYFIBER AND ITS SUPPLIERS AND LICENSORS DISCLAIM ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY, OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

&#x20;

12\. CUSTOMER REMEDIES

&#x20;

Licensee’s exclusive remedy and LoftyFiber’s entire liability for breach of the Limited Warranty shall be, at LoftyFiber’s option: (a) repair or replacement of the Software that does not meet the Limited Warranty; or (b) refund of the license fee paid for the nonconforming Software. Any replacement Software will be warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period or thirty (30) days, whichever is longer.

&#x20;

13\. LIMITATION OF LIABILITYTO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL LOFTYFIBER OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, SUPPLIERS, OR LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, GOODWILL, OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THIS EULA OR THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. IN NO EVENT SHALL LOFTYFIBER’S AGGREGATE LIABILITY UNDER THIS EULA EXCEED THE TOTAL LICENSE FEES PAID BY LICENSEE FOR THE SOFTWARE GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM.

&#x20;

14\. INJUNCTIVE RELIEF

&#x20;

Licensee acknowledges that any unauthorized use, copying, or disclosure of the Software may cause irreparable harm to LoftyFiber for which monetary damages would be an inadequate remedy. LoftyFiber shall be entitled to seek immediate injunctive relief, in addition to any other remedies available at law or in equity, without the requirement to post bond or prove actual damages.

&#x20;

15\. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS AND SANCTIONS COMPLIANCE

&#x20;

If Licensee is a U.S. Government agency or contractor, the Software is provided with "RESTRICTED RIGHTS" as defined in applicable regulations. Licensee agrees to comply with all U.S. export control laws and regulations and represents that it and its Authorized Users are not subject to U.S. sanctions or located in embargoed countries. Licensee may not export or re-export the Software in violation of such laws.

&#x20;

16\. CONSUMER RIGHTS

&#x20;

If Licensee is a consumer (not a business) and mandatory consumer protection laws in Licensee’s jurisdiction grant additional rights, nothing in this EULA shall limit those statutory rights.

&#x20;

17\. TERMINATION

&#x20;

LoftyFiber may terminate this EULA immediately if Licensee breaches any material term of this EULA. Upon termination, Licensee must cease all use of the Software and destroy all copies in its possession or control. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including but not limited to payment obligations, intellectual property, indemnity, limitations of liability, and governing law) shall survive.

&#x20;

18\. CONTINUITY OF TEMPOWEAVE PRO FEATURES

&#x20;

18.1 Guarantee of Continued Access. If LoftyFiber permanently ceases business operations or permanently discontinues TempoWeave, all users with an active TempoWeave Pro subscription at the time of such cessation ("Pro Subscribers") shall automatically receive a perpetual license to the then-current TempoWeave Pro features.

&#x20;

18.2 Offline Activation. In such an event, LoftyFiber will make reasonable efforts to provide Pro Subscribers with an offline activation mechanism and a non-expiring license key enabling continued use of Pro features on supported systems existing at the time of cessation.

&#x20;

18.3 Scope. This guarantee applies only to features available in the TempoWeave Pro tier at the time LoftyFiber ceases operations or discontinues TempoWeave. It does not obligate LoftyFiber to provide new features, further updates, or ongoing online services.

&#x20;

18.4 No Additional Fees. Pro Subscribers shall not be charged additional fees for the perpetual Pro license described in this Section.

&#x20;

19\. AUTHORITY TO ACCEPT

Licensee warrants and represents to LoftyFiber that this EULA shall be binding upon Licensee and each of its Authorized Users, and that the individual agreeing to be bound under the terms and conditions of this EULA is duly authorized or has been empowered to do so on behalf of the Licensee.

&#x20;

20\. THIRD PARTY BENEFICIARY

Licensee acknowledges and agrees that LoftyFiber’s suppliers and licensors (and/or LoftyFiber if the license for the Software was obtained through any party other than LoftyFiber) are third party beneficiaries of this EULA, with the right to enforce the obligations set forth herein with regard to the respective technology, applicable software, or Content of such suppliers, licensors, and/or LoftyFiber.

&#x20;

21\. THIRD PARTY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND TERMS

The Software licensed under the terms and conditions of this EULA may use or include third party components, Content, other copyrighted material, and/or open source software which may be subject to certain “open source” or “free software” licenses (“Open Source Software”). Acknowledgments, licensing terms and additional disclaimers for such components, Content, materials, or Open Source Software are contained in the “online” electronic documentation for the Software (including, without limitation, a 3rdPartyLicensing.txt file) or may otherwise accompany the same, or are contained in addendums to this EULA. The use of such components, Content, other materials, and/or Open Source Software is governed by their respective terms and conditions, and nothing in this EULA limits the rights of Licensee or grants any rights that supersede the terms and conditions of any such third party terms and conditions for such third party components, Content, materials, and/or Open Source Software.

&#x20;

22\. GOVERNING LAW AND JURISDICTION

This EULA is governed by the laws of the State of South Carolina, U.S.A. to the extent that U.S. federal laws are not applicable, without regard to their conflict of law principles. Licensee, on behalf of itself and its Authorized Users, agrees to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the State of South Carolina, U.S.A. and the United States District Court that is located or has a presence in Greenville County, South Carolina, U.S.A. This EULA has been prepared in the English language, and such version shall be controlling in all respects; any non-English version is solely for convenience. The parties waive personal service of process and consent that service of process may be made by registered mail and shall be deemed completed five (5) business days after deposit in the United States mail, postage prepaid, and waive any objection based on inconvenient forum or venue. This EULA shall not be governed by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded. Licensees that are U.S. federal, state, or local government entities using the Software in an official capacity and that are legally unable to accept the controlling law, jurisdiction, or venue clauses above are instead bound by the laws of the United States of America (without reference to conflict of laws) and, in the absence of federal law and to the extent permitted under federal law, the laws of the State of South Carolina (excluding choice of law).

&#x20;

23\. DATA PROTECTION AND PRIVACY

&#x20;

23.1 Privacy Policy. All collection and use of personal data in connection with the Software, including any data described in Section 4 (License Compliance), is governed by LoftyFiber’s Privacy Policy, as amended from time to time and incorporated into this EULA by reference. The Privacy Policy describes what personal data is collected, how it is used, and what rights individuals may have under applicable law.

23.2 Compliance with Privacy Laws. LoftyFiber will comply with applicable data protection laws, including, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Licensee is responsible for ensuring that it has a lawful basis for providing LoftyFiber with any personal data of its Authorized Users and for any other processing it performs using the Software.

23.3 Data Subject Rights. Requests by individuals to exercise rights of access, correction, deletion, objection, restriction, or portability under applicable data protection laws will be handled in accordance with LoftyFiber’s Privacy Policy and legal obligations.

24\. AUTOMATIC UPDATES

24.1 Updates and Patches. The Software may periodically communicate with LoftyFiber or its service providers to check for available updates, upgrades, or patches and may automatically download and install such items. By using the Software, Licensee consents to the receipt and installation of these updates.

24.2 Mandatory Updates. Certain updates may be mandatory if required for security, license compliance, legal obligations, or proper functioning of the Software. If Licensee disables or interferes with such updates, the Software may not function correctly, and LoftyFiber shall not be responsible for any resulting failure or non-performance.

24.3 No Obligation to Provide New Features. LoftyFiber is not obligated to provide new features, major upgrades, or future versions of the Software under this EULA unless expressly agreed in an Order or separate agreement.

25\. CONSUMER LAW AND NON-EXCLUDABLE RIGHTS

If Licensee is a consumer and not a business, certain mandatory consumer protection laws in Licensee’s jurisdiction may grant additional rights that cannot be excluded or limited by contract. To the extent such laws apply, nothing in this EULA is intended to exclude, restrict, or modify any non-excludable statutory rights or remedies available to Licensee. To the maximum extent permitted by law, LoftyFiber’s liability for any breach of a non-excludable guarantee or condition is limited, at LoftyFiber’s option, to the repair or replacement of the Software, the supply of equivalent software, or the refund of the amount paid for the Software.

26\. GENERAL

26.1 Governing Law and Jurisdiction. This EULA is governed by the laws of the State of South Carolina, USA, without regard to conflict of law principles. Licensee agrees to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Greenville County, South Carolina, USA, except where prohibited by applicable law.

26.2 Entire Agreement. This EULA, together with any applicable Orders and the LoftyFiber Privacy Policy, constitutes the entire agreement between the parties regarding the Software and supersedes all prior agreements, understandings, or representations.

26.3 Amendments. LoftyFiber may amend this EULA by posting an updated version on its website. Continued use of the Software after the effective date of an amendment constitutes acceptance of the amended terms.

26.4 Severability. If any provision of this EULA is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

26.5 Assignment. Licensee may not assign or transfer this EULA or any rights hereunder without the prior written consent of LoftyFiber. LoftyFiber may assign this EULA in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of substantially all of its assets.

# TempoTreadle - Automatic Tracking for your Loom


# TempoTreadle Introduction

TempoTreadle is a system uniquely designed to use with your traditional loom making your weaving process more accurate and stress free.    Audible error beeps on floor looms help the weaver quickly correct any misplaced pick and get back on track.  Similarly, ok beeps on table looms let the weaver know when the correct levers have been thrown to obtain the correct shed according to the draft.

The name, TempoTreadle, reflects the intention to not interrupt a weaver’s natural rhythm.  The tempo of treadling through the sequences should remain natural, but with the added assurance that the weaver will be warned of a treadling mistake, and need not worry about getting lost in the treadling sequence if distracted.  Unlike other treadle tracking software, the software automatically detects when to advance the pick without the weaver needing to take any action; the TempoTreadle system knows whether you pressed the correct treadles.  Normally you don’t watch the display while weaving, but if you do want to check the display screen you’ll see the previous, current and next treadling sequence, pick color, what treadles are pressed (if any), pick counters and total time weaving.   Other features assist in calculating the length woven, alerts for section changes, and information screens to verify tie-ups, colors used and more.

TempoTreadle is extremely useful for highly complex and long treadling sequences, but even a plain weave project can benefit from using the system.  For example, if you had a warp for plain weave napkins, you may want to set alerts when the pick count had been reached to end each napkin, or be reminded when to change colors.  When your project is finished, you can know exactly how much time you spent weaving.&#x20;

There’s no modification required to your loom, just a little Velcro to attach parts in a few places. &#x20;

# TempoTreadle Components

**System Unit** - you can think of it as the weaving computer. As a weaver, you'll use the System Unit's touch screen, insert the micro-sd card into the slot when you load a new project and you'll power the system unit on when ready to weave or setup your loom.

**Sensor Array** - Typically this is a slim rectangular box that fits under the loom's treadles or a table loom's levers. The sensor array has sensors that fit under each treadle or level that sense a magnetic field when that shaft or level comes close.  A ribbon cable transmits that signal to the System Unit, where the System Unit interprets what is happening on the loom and gives the weaver feedback, such as an error sound, or ok beep and a change to the next pick.

**Magnets** - Magnets are attached either under treadles or on levers.  Usually strong magnets have been inserted into a 3d-printed case specially designed to hold the magnet.  Velcro is preapplied so that it's easy to attach to the treadle or lever.

This is a snapshot of a Sensor Array under the treadles of a floor loom. The case is 3d-printed in a translucent filament so you can see the shadow of the black sensors that are lining up under teh treadles.  Also notice the ribbon cable exiting the sensor array; that ribbon cable will go up the side of the loom and attach to the System Unit.

The following snapshot shows a sensor array being placed on a table loom.  When the levers are lowered, the magnets that are on the levers will line up close to the sensors and that signal will be detected by the System Unit.

As each loom model is different, the TempoTreadle system is customized for those individual looms.  The sensor arrays are not only spaced specifically treadle or lever spacing, but also the method of attaching the sensor array to the loom varies.&#x20;

Floor loom Sensor Arrays usually come with brackets that hold the array in place. Brackets usually are designed to easily snap onto a treadle rod or cross piece, depending on the model.   Table loom sensor arrays usually attach with Velcro that is supplied with the sensor array.&#x20;

Special Magnets, usually in 3d-printed cases with velcro, are supplied with the Sensor Arrays.

In no case is any permanent physical modification to the loom required to install the TempoTreadle system.  Only velcro and brackets attached with friction are used.

# Home Screen

The **Home Screen** is the screen that appears when TempoTreadle is powered on.  Menu options are shown on the home screen.&#x20;

To select a menu or any option, a finger may be used to press the option or a touch screen pointer.

The icon that looks like a house at the lower right corner is on every menu.  When pressed, it always returns to the Home Screen as shown above.

The blue bar at the top of the Home Screen shows the name of the WIF that is loaded; it is blank if no WIF is loaded.&#x20;

The **Weave Menu Option** is used while weaving.  See Link: Coming Soon

**System Settings** apply to all projects and are saved on the Micro-SD card. This includes configuring the Sounds, Units (Imperial or Metric), reaching Tune Array, Auto-Load settings and the overall Volume.

**System Info** displays information about your System Unit.

# WIF File Requirements

WIF - Weaving Information File Standard

A WIF file is needed for a weaving project. The WIF file is a standard representation of a weaving draft.  This standard can be read and produced by all handweaving software. &#x20;

The threading, tie-up (if not a liftplan) and treadling should be representative of the draft that is to be woven.   It is not necessary to have all the repeats of the treadling or threading. &#x20;

TempoTreadle will wrap around to "pick 1" once the last weft pick is woven and continue to repeat the treadling sequence while incrememnting pick counters for total picks woven.

Colors from the WIF file will also be shown on the TempoTreadle system unit for threading and treadling.

When weaving on a table loom, be sure to have a Liftplan instead of a WIF with a tie-up. Weave design software programs have a feature to convert from tie-up to liftplan.

WIF files can either be copied (using File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac), or they can be saved directly from Weave Design Software onto the Micro-SD card.

If copying a long file name, be sure to rename the WIF file placed on the micro-sd card to meet the following requirements before loading into TempoTreadle.

* TempoTreadle II - 15 characters (if over 22, the file will not display on project load)

Do not create and place WIF files in folders on the Micro-SD card

The Notes field in WIF files is not support if over 32 characters.&#x20;

If you are a TempoWeave user, the "[Export for TempoTreadle](https://docs.tempoweave.com/documentation-by-menu-function/file-options/export-for-tempotreadle)" option formats an appropriate WIF for the SD-Card and removes notes, performs other validation checks before saving the copy to the Micro-SD card.  In addition, it builds the cache files for faster loading.

There is one feature used in many of the weaving design programs that allows the typing of notes that can cause an issue.  If the text is longer than 32 characters, TempoTreadle cannot load the WIF.  Various weave design programs refer to this field, which is a standard field in the WIF format, with a few different names.   Here are some examples of where these notes are found:

Fiberworks - Cloth | Notes and Records

PixeLoom - File | Properties | Notes

WeavePoint - Toolbar - Notes

TempoWeave - Project | Project Information | Project Notes

other weave design software may have slightly different names for this field.

If you have project notes in your WIF design, remove the notes in the version that you save to your Micro-SD card.&#x20;


# Preparing WIF files for your Project


# Saving a WIF to your Micro-SD Card

Once inserted in the computer, a Drive Letter will be assigned to the micro-sd card.  By default, the name of the Micro-SD card supplied with TempoTreadle system units is named  "TEMPTREADL" so it's easy to recognize the card in your File Explorer (Windows PC) or Finder (Mac) application.&#x20;

It is recommended that you retain your original design files on your computer.  Consider the files on the micro-sd card to be copies that are only used while weaving.  You may want to occasionally delete old project files from your Micro-SD card to make it easier to find your new projects in TempoTreadle.

When using a MAC, remember to eject your memory card before removing (found under “Finder”), otherwise your saved file may not write to the memory card correctly. &#x20;

## On a Windows PC

In File Explorer, the File Type for a WIF file will read "Windows Information File" for the WIF file. By default, File Explorer does not show the actual extension (.wif).  It is possible to change File Explore to show the file extensions.

In Finder, the column labeled "Kind" for a WIF file may read as any of the following: WIF File, WIF Document, TempoWeave.app Document or perhaps other labels.  If unsure, right click on the file and select "Get Info"; there the entire file name will be shown at the top of the information panel. It is also possible to change the settings in Finder to show file extensions:

To physically insert the small micro-sd card into your computer, you will need to use an adapter.  We supply a USB adapter that has a slot that the micro-sd card can be inserted. &#x20;

If your computer has a USB-C port and no standard USB port, an inexpensive adapter can be purchased to allow a standard USB adapter to be used.&#x20;

**For a PC,** here are step by step instructions to copy a WIF file to the Micro-SD Card if you do not have TempoWeave Studio:

1\. Prepare the Micro-SD card in the USB adapter

• Insert your SD card into the SD adapter.

• Plug the SD adapter into an available USB slot on your PC.

2\. Access the SD Card on PC:

• Wait for your computer to recognize the SD card. A notification may appear, or you can open File Explorer (Windows + E) to see if the SD card is listed under “This PC” or “My Computer”.

3\. Locate the .WIF File on your Computer

• Navigate to the folder where your .WIF file resides

4\. Copy the .WIF File:

• Right-click on the .WIF file.

• Select “Copy” from the context menu.

5\. Navigate to the SD Card:

• In File Explorer, click on the SD card to open it. It will typically be labeled as “Removable Disk” or by the name of the SD card.

6\. Paste the .WIF File:

• Right-click inside the SD card window.

• Select “Paste” from the context menu. This will copy the .WIF file to the SD card.

7\. Safely Eject the SD Card:

• Click on the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen).

• Select the SD card from the list and wait for the “Safe to Remove Hardware” message.

8\. Remove the SD Card:

• Once it is safe to remove, unplug the SD adapter from the USB slot.

• Remove the SD card from the adapter if needed.

• Ensure that the SD card has enough free space for the .WIF file.

• If the SD card is not recognized, try using a different USB slot or check if the SD card needs formatting.

• Always use the “Safely Remove Hardware” option to avoid data corruption.

**For a Mac,** here are step by step instructions to copy a WIF file to the Micro-SD Card if you do not have TempoWeave Studio:

#### Copying a .WIF File to a Micro-SD Card (Mac Instructions)

**1. Prepare the Micro-SD Card in the USB Adapter**

* Insert your Micro-SD card into the SD adapter.
* Plug the SD adapter into an available USB port on your Mac (you may need a USB-C adapter depending on your Mac model).

**2. Access the SD Card on Your Mac**

* Wait a moment for your Mac to recognize the SD card.
* The SD card should appear on your desktop and in **Finder** under “Locations” in the sidebar.

**3. Locate the .WIF File on Your Computer**

* Open **Finder**.
* Navigate to the folder where your .WIF file is stored.

***

**4. Copy the .WIF File**

* Click once on the .WIF file to select it.
* Right-click (or Control-click) the file and choose **“Copy”** from the menu.\
  *(You can also use Command + C.)*

**5. Open the SD Card**

* In **Finder**, click on the SD card listed under “Locations.”
* It may be labeled “Untitled,” “NO NAME,” or with a custom name.

**6. Paste the .WIF File**

* Right-click (or Control-click) inside the SD card window.
* Select **“Paste Item”** from the menu.\
  *(Or use Command + V.)*
* The .WIF file will be copied to the SD card.

**7. Safely Eject the SD Card**

* In **Finder**, click the **Eject** icon next to the SD card in the sidebar,\
  **or** drag the SD card icon from the desktop to the Trash (which becomes an eject symbol).
* Wait until the SD card disappears from the desktop and Finder.

**8. Remove the SD Card**

* Once ejected, unplug the SD adapter from your Mac.
* Remove the Micro-SD card from the adapter if needed.

These steps should help you successfully copy a .WIF file to an SD card using an SD adapter and a USB slot.


# Inserting and Removing Micro-SD Cards from the TT System Unit

To insert the micro-sd card, insert the micro-sd card with the metal strips down as shown below.  Then push the card into the slot.  Note that the card should be pushed straight in.

To remove the micro-sd card, place your fingers over the edge and pull it the card straight out.   Note that there is no "spring action" on this device; simply pull to remove, don't push and pull.

The picture below shows the a Micro-SD card fully inserted.  There will be a small lip (about 2.5mm) extending from the case.

# Loading your Design

Once your WIF file is saved to the Micro-SD card, with the power off, insert the Micro-SD card into the System Unit. The metal contacts on the card need to face towards the back when inserting the card. &#x20;

It is important that the metal contacts face to the back (away from the screen) when inserting the card. &#x20;

Power the System Unit on, and choose Project Setup.

Next select Load WIF.  &#x20;

Select the file name by placing your finger or pointer directly on the file name.  Once selected, a green "Load" button will appear.  Press the green Load button.

Green arrows on the right are available to scroll up and down if more files are on the card than will fit on the screen.

When your file is being loaded, you will see a progress indicator for the threading, treadling and color loading. Once finished loading, the main menu shows once again, ready for you to select Weave or any other option.

By default, TempoTreadle sets Auto-Load to "On", meaning that each time you power up the TempoTreadle system unit, it will automatically load the last project that was used.  This saves time from finding and selecting the current project.  When ready to change to a new project, simply do a File | Load and then the the new project will become the default.  The Auto-Load setting is on the System Settings menu.

Loading an Updated Version of a Project - Please Read

When you need to update the WIF file on a project that has been previously loaded on your SD card, it's recommended that you load it with a slightly different name.  If you simply replace the WIF file on the SD card, there is a change that the changes you made may not be reflected properly as TempoTreadle builds some special files to optimize the performance using the name of the draft.

# Loom Settings for your Project

On the Project Setup Menu

A new TempoTreadle system comes with a default settings file for your loom. This settings file has values for the Loom Action configuration.   If you have TempoTreadle sensor arrays on more than one loom and share a System Unit and SD card, you will need to verify the settings.&#x20;

There are currently 4 selections for loom action: Multiple, Single, Table and Table 2. The Loom Action setting can be changed at any time and takes effect immediately. &#x20;

The most common settings for floor looms are Action Multiple and Position Up; for table looms Action Table and Position Up.  For countermarch looms, Action Single is usually used.

## Loom Action Multiple

The Multiple Setting accounts for a tie-up on a floor loom where more than one treadle may go down when a treadle is pressed. This is most commonly seen on Jack style looms for certain tie-ups.  For example, if treadle 1 is tied to shafts 1,2 and 3 and treadle 2 is tied to shafts 1 and 2, then Treadle 2 will physically go down when treadle 1 is pressed.

In addition, for some weaves, the weaver may press more than one treadle at a time (often called skeleton tie-ups).&#x20;

If more than one treadle is to be depressed at a time, or more than one treadle may go down automatically, then Loom Action Multiple should be selected.

When this loom action is selected, no error checking occurs until all the treadles are lifted (the shed is closed).  At that time the error checking occurs, and if no error the sequence advances.  If an error is detected, the error tone is sounded and the pick sequence does not advance.

## Loom Action Single

Single Loom action is normally selected for Countermarch looms as they often only have one treadle going down at a time.   On Single Action, as soon as a treadle is depressed it is checked against the WIF; the weaver will then hear an error or ok beep while the shed is still open.&#x20;

If your Jack Loom has a tie-up such that only one treadle goes down at a time, you can use Single Mode and receive your error notifications before you throw an errant pick.&#x20;

## Loom Action Table

Table Loom action waits for all the shafts to be correctly positioned for the current sequence before issuing the “ok” beep and advancing the sequence.   This mode does not require a closed shed, and it does not issue error tones.   With this mode, the weaver listens for confirmation of the ok beep before placing the pick.  A Liftplan (not tie-up) is usually used with this mode.

## Loom Action Table 2

Table 2 is the same as Table Loom action, except for only one pick sequence can be displayed at a time due to the number of shafts.  If the WIF has more than 8 shafts, there is not room on the screen for the typical WEAV display.   In Table  2 mode, you look at the colors Blue means the lever needs to be down, Red means a lever is down that should not be, and Green means the lever is correctly down. See the following link for more information on Table 2 mode.

## &#x20;Position

Position UP means the default state of the magnet is “up” off the sensor.  This applies to most looms, and is the default setting.

If Position is Down, the magnets are down (in range) of the sensors as a default and are in the up position if a treadle or lever has been depressed. &#x20;

# Thread Assist

On the Project Setup Menu

Thread Assist will display your threading sequence in small groups at a time, and allow you to mark as threaded and advance with a single tap.&#x20;

Threading progress is saved, so when you leave the loom or power down the unit, each group that you reported as threaded is remembered, and the screen will reflect where you left off when you go back into Thread Assist. It is suggested, as with treadling, that you press the home key before powering down to be certain your progress is saved.

Looking at the screenshot below from an original TempoTreadle System Unit, the warp sequence numbers show above the color circles reflecting the warp thread color.  In this example, there are black and yellow warp threads. &#x20;

&#x20;If you look at the computer drawdown of your WIF, the first warp thread (or sequence is the warp thread at the far right of the drawdown; the highest warp number (equal to your total warp ends) is on the far left of the drawdown.

In the picture, warp sequences 86-93 are shown; sequence 86 is intended for shaft 2, 87 on shaft 3… sequence 93 on shaft 9. &#x20;

Also In the picture, sequence 86 happens to be the center warp thread and is marked by coloring the sequence red and putting a “center” symbol in the black thread.

**Green Scroll Arrows**: You can scroll through the treading sequences (left and right) by pressing the green arrows.   Scrolling with the green arrows does not mark the groups as threaded.   To mark a group as threaded, press the screen anywhere near the color circles and the threads; that group of threads will be recorded as threaded and the screen will advance to the next threading group.  When scrolling back through groups already threaded, they will have red lines instead of black separating the warp threads.  The red lines indicate “threaded”.

**Thread Groups**: The number of threads shown at a time is determined based on the value in “Groups”.   A maximum of 8 is recommended.  To change the value of the group, press the screen near “Groups”, then use the pop-up keypad to change the value.   To use the keypad, press “del” to remove existing digits, press the number desired, then “Ent” for enter.   This should return you to the threading screen with the new group in effect. &#x20;

This picture shows a TempoTreadle keypad.  To remove numbers press the DEL (delete key).  Press numbers on the screen as needed, then ENT (enter) to enter those numbers and return to Threading.

The TempoTreadle II System Units have a new feature, **Position** as shown below.

If you want to automatically position to a certain warp sequence, click into the button and enter the warp sequence on the keypad.&#x20;

***Tip for the Original TempoTreadle System Units**: Sometimes the “natural” threading repeats are bordered with a different number of warp ends.  For example, suppose you have a 4-shaft point twill threading of 23432  (6 threads), and the  threading starts with 1234 at the right edge.   Set your threading group to 1 and thread the 4 starting warp ends, then when sequence 5 is showing, change the thread group to 6.  Now you will be threading in the same groups as naturally appear on your threading diagram repeat.* &#x20;

***Tip for the TempoTreadle II System Units**: Sometimes the “natural” threading repeats are bordered with a different number of warp ends.  If you start threading, and at a certain point want to orient the the threading such that the first thread of a repeat is rightmost thread on the screen, use the Position field to set where you want it to start; also set the Group value to something that helps. For example, if the threading sequence is 1-2-3-4-3-2 at a certain point in your design, you might want to reset the position to a certain sequence right before that repeat starts and also use a 6-thread group.  Now you will be threading in the same groups as naturally appear on your threading diagram repeat.* &#x20;

### &#x20;Threading Direction Choices

The hand icon under "Dir" for direction shows the current direction of threading.

**Threading Right to Left:** By default, a new project will have the direction set Right to Left, starting with sequence 1.T

**Treading from the Center:** To thread from the center, first locate the center by pressing the center button shown at the right.  Pressing this area on the screen will position the group where the center thread is the rightmost thread of the group.  Once positioned, set the direction (the icon that looks like a hand) pointing left to thread from this center thread to the left ; set the hand pointing to the right and press to advance to the next group to thread to the right

**Threading Left to Right:** The hand can be changed to point to the right.   Then the highest warp sequence will be threaded first, decreasing until the first sequence is reached.

The threading sequence wraps when you complete the entire series.   If you do not define all the warp threads for your project, but only the threading repeat, the Thread Assist will continue to repeat the threads until you are completed.  For example, if your warp just defined 1-2-3-4, you could thread 1000 warp ends, it would just wrap over and over.

If your threading group does not come out even, you’ll notice some 0’s on the end for the shaft numbers.  This is normal, just ignore the "o"s.

# Mapping Treadles

On Project Setup - Treadle Array

When weaving on a floor loom, the weaver often decides which treadles to use as Treadle 1, 2, etc. Whether centering or walking the treadles, TempoTreadle needs to know how the weaver has tied up the physical treadles that correspond to the Tie-Up in the WIF.

The WIF shows treadle 1 on the left of the tie-up box, treadle 2 next, etc.

TempoTreadle refers to the treadles on the loom as Treadle Positions.  Position 1 is the leftmost treadle, position 2 the next treadle to the right, etc.

For example, if the weaver has a 10-treadle loom and plans to leave the outer two treadles not tied for their 8-treadle pattern, then treadles positions 1 and 10 need to be turned off.   Treadle position 2 needs to be mapped to Treadle 1, Treadle Position 3 mapped to Treadle 2, etc. This way when the weaver pressed the first treadle that is tied-up (position 2), TempoTreadle will recognize that as Treadle 1 being depressed.

In the following picture, the 4th treadle position (shown as Pos: 4) on the loom is mapped to Treadle 1.

When a Treadle is not tie-up, the Status needs to be turned OFF, otherwise it will constantly be detected as it is resting on the sensor.

If a Treadle is tie-up and is not being used, consider mapping it to a treadle not in the design so that an error tone will be generated if the treadle is depressed.

**Using this Screen**

Touch the Status and Color Alert boxes to toggle the value.&#x20;

Press the up and down arrows on the right to move to the settings for the next or prior treadle position.

To change the treadle mapping, press the arrows to select the WIF's treadle number.

**Color Alerts**

Color Alerts can be turned on or off as desired. Color alerts are triggered when a color change is occurring on the next weft pick.   For more information, see [Broken mention](broken://pages/pbkhjeQczmxenv04TUtn)

Settings on this screen for a Table Loom apply to Shaft Levers, not Treadles.

**Additional Treadle Positions**

The treadle settings screen will allow selection of more treadle positions than those on your loom; these extra treadles can be ignored.   For example, if you have a 10-treadle loom, there will be settings for 11-16.  It’s not necessary to change the status on these treadles.  The only exception to this is with looms that require a “down” position in System Settings (rare).


# Color Change Alerts

On Project Setup - Treadle Array

Color Alerts are a special tone, significantly different from ok and error tones, to sound when a color change is coming up on the next pick.  This is designed to let you know to change the shuttle or bobbin color in advance.

***A color alert will sound on a successful pick if the NEXT pick involves a color change unless that next pick’s treadle has had the color alert turned off.***

Color alerts can be turned on or off by Treadle by pressing to toggle the value from ON to OFF.  Use the green arrow keys to navigate up or down.

For example, if your entire project alternated with a blue and green weft, you may choose to turn the color alerts off for all treadles.&#x20;

If you were weaving overshot and had tabby treadles in one color and pattern weft treadles that had a few different colors throughout the piece, it is helpful to turn off the color alerts on the tabby treadles and leave the pattern treadle color alerts on.

*Note that although "Treadle" mapping is almost never used on a Table loom, the Color Alert feature is often used to turn off Color Alerts by shaft.*


# Checking your Tie-Up

Project Setup Menu - Tie-Up

The tie-up display is an information only screen that can be useful to double check that the tie-up as called for in the WIF has been done correctly.  The simple shaft number list per treadle is a good double-check to avoid errors in the cloth due to tie-up. Simply sit on your loom bench, press each treadle and looking at the tie-up screen verify that the correct shafts move.  You may have to use the scroll down arrow to see additional treadles. In the TempoTreadle screen picture below,  treadle 1 is tied to shafts 1 and 2;  treadle 2 to shafts 3 and 4, etc.

# Colors Used

Before beginning to thread or weave,  if you have several colors in similar hues, we can be useful to review how the colors look on the TempoWeave screen.   The Project Setup | Colors Used function simply shows a color dot for all colors that are used in the warp or weft.&#x20;

# The Weave Screen

The Basic Weaving Screen

Areas marked in Yellow:

* 1 - The blue bar has the current file name in ther upper left area and the total time spent weaving on the right in hours:minutes:seconds.   Weaving time calculated when on the Weave Screen and actively treadling. The timer stops when no treadles are pressed in 3 minutes, and starts again once a treadle is pressed.  *For table looms, the same action happens based on pressing levers.*
* 2 - The main section of the screen shows three treadling sequences with headings SEQ (sequence), CLR (color) and TRD (treadle). The line in the middle, showing slightly larger, is the current sequence; Current means this is the treadling sequence that should be woven next. In the example above, sequence 169 is calling for treadle 1 using the light tan weft as the next pick. &#x20;
* 3 - Any treadles (or levers on a table loom) detected on the sensor array are shown here starting after the ">" symbol.  In this example, treadle 1 is detected.
* 4 - The up arrow allows the weavers to scroll up in the WIF one sequence at a time. In this example, pressing the arrow once would bring the 167th pick to the top of the screen.  The opposite action happens on the lower arrow.  Scrolling through the WIF does not change any counters. The weaver can reposition the sequence manually with this method. If needing to move through the sequences quickly (similar to fast forward), use a firmer press and hold to advance quickly in the direction. Repositioning the sequence can also be changed in [Broken mention](broken://pages/GtwXVVny3WLsqC9Lumim#reset-progress)
* &#x20;5 - Two pick counters automatically increment with each pick woven by default.  Unless changed on by the weaver on the Project Progress menu, they will always have the same value. The second counter could be useful if counting picks in a special section of the woven cloth. When weaving in UNWV (unweave) mode, the pick counters decrement by one for each unwoven pick.
* 6- The interval counter, if activated shows the current interval counter value (170 on the example) and the limit of the interval (200); A special tone will be sounded once the counter reaches the interval limit. /
* 7 - The Home icon returns to the main menu.  It is recommended that this icon always be pressed before taking a break from weaving.  When weaving on a table loom, place all the levers in neutral before pressing Home.

# Unweave and Free Weave

There are three modes on the Weaving Screen.  The default mode is "WEAV" (weave). Pressing this button on the screen cycles through the weave modes.  The next press goes into "UNWV" (unweave) mode with a red background.  Press again and the screen shows "FREE" (free weave) with a green background.

If backing out picks is required, press the "WEAV" button on the screen once.  It will then turn to "UNWV" with a red background; the sequences will start going in reverse, promoting for the treadling and sounding ok and error alerts as if in "WEAV" mode.  Once ready to reweave the picks, press the button twice to return to "WEAV" mode.

Free Weave does not track through the sequences.  It doesn't sound any errors nor advance to the next pick.   It displays the treadles that are detected and increments pick counters. Since the pick counters are incremented, then length of the cloth continues to calculate based on the PPI (picks per inch).

Free Weave is not supported in Table Loom or Table2 Loom modes.

# Stopping a Weaving Session

When ready to take a break from weaving, always press the Home Icon in the lower right corner.  Although progress is saved as you are weaving, this is an extra measure of safety.&#x20;

If the System Unit is left powered on, a screen saver will appear in a few minutes.  To go back to weaving, simply press anywhere on the screen and the screen saver will disappear.

For an extended break where you want to power off the system unit, simply turn the Switch to Off on the TempoTreadle II units.  For the original system units, use either the cord with the button or disconnect from the battery or the AC plug.


# The Sequence and Pick Counters

Project Progress - Counters

Shown below is snapshot of the counters screen.  Notice the project file name is at the top on a blue background.

The Sequence refers to the weft pick from your WIF (weft pick 1 is the first pick in the treadling sequence).   TempoWeave always starts at Pick 1 for a new project and advances automatically through your weaving draft as you weave.  The Sequence is shown on all the Weave Screens. &#x20;

Under Project Progress and Counters, the first value is the Sequence, the current pick sequence in the WIF.   By changing this value, the current sequence in the Weave screen will reflect that change.  Changing the sequence on the Counters screen is another way of changing the current pick (line in the WIF) for the weave screen (as opposed to using the green arrows to select on the weave screen).  &#x20;

The Counters Screen also shows values of the two pick counters, the interval pick counter and the interval limit. &#x20;

The Pick 1 and Pick 2 counters always increment by one every time you have woven a pick succesfully (without an error, so that the sequence advances).  When unweaving, both pick counters descrease by 1.   The reason TempoTreadle has two pick counters is to accomodate the ability to track two things at once.  For example, you may want to keep up with the total picks woven with one counter, and perhaps count the picks woven on a specific piece of section with the other pick counter.&#x20;

# Calculating Picks Per Inch (PPI)

Actual picks per inch can be calculated by weaving a known length and dividing the picks woven by that length in inches.   To access the Calc PPI function, first click Length option on the Project Progress screen.&#x20;

To have TempoWeave calculate actual picks per inch, first click into the PPI field as shown below (this is on the Project Progress | Length screen).

If setting manually, you simply enter the picks per inch.  To have TempoTreadle calculate the PPI for you, enter a length in inches and the calculation will be the pick counter divided by the length.

After clicking Set from Len & Pick 1, you will need to enter the Length (in inches) on the screen keyboard.  Then after pressing Enter, the calculated PPI will be shown on the Woven Length Screen.&#x20;

For now on, the length calculations on the Project Progress screem will use this PPI value to calulate the woven length.&#x20;

* **Note - when starting a new warp, you may want to reset one of the pick counters to 0, place a small string in the edge of the shed and weave a few inches before having the calculation performed.**  \*

The following example shows the woven length (in yards and inches) based on the PPI.  Note that the length is shown for two pick counters, as well as an interval pick counter. Usually, just pick counter 1 is used.

# Interval Limits - Alerting when Length is Reached

An interval counter is another type of pick counter that can be set to use in combination with an interval limit.  For example, if an interval limit is set to 1000 under Project Progress | Counters <mark style="color:red;">INSERT LINK</mark>,  then the interval counter will start to increment by one every time the weaving advances by one pick.  Once the pick counter reaches the limit (1000 in this example), a special tone will sound to alert the weaver and the Interval Counter will automatically be set back to zero.

Interval limits and counters are typically used to accurately stop a woven piece at a specific length.

As long as an accurate PPI has been established, see [Broken mention](broken://pages/cvZqliDpHH0qDqlZIfle), the interval limit can be calculated by entering the length desired for the interval alert.

To prepare to use the interval limit, you need to establish where you are in the interval (if not at the start).  The interval counter, unlike the Pick 1 and Pick 2 counters, doesn't automatically increment unless there is a non-zero value in the Interval limit field. If starting at the beginning of the interval (normally length of a woven piece), then simply calculate the interval limit and keep weaving.  If the  weaving of the "interval" has already started, set the counter to the number of picks woven in that interval.  When starting a woven piece, often this counter is the same as the Pick 1 counter. The screen below shows that the weaving design is on the 3rd pick of the draft and 305 picks have been woven. In the example below, the towel had already had 305 picks woven and the weaver is preparing to set an interval limit to issue an alert when the length of the towel is complete.  By clicking in "Int Count", the keyboard entry screen allows the weaver to enter value of picks already woven in the interval, in this example, 305:

Now, the Interval Limit, "Int Limit" needs to be set.  When clicking in the field, the following screen is shown:

There are two options:  Set Manually or Set from Length.   Set Manually allows for entering the interval pick count limit where the tone occurs.  More frequently, the second option is used to set from the length.  This does require that the Picks per Inch has a value. See [Broken mention](broken://pages/cvZqliDpHH0qDqlZIfle) for more information on setting Picks per Inch. So for example, if the weaver wants an interval tone sounded when 28 inches is completed, the steps are to select Set from Len (shown above), then on the keypad entry enter 28 as shown below for 28 inches.

The Interval Limit (Int Limit) will now show 488, that corresponds to the 17.43 PPI that was already established.&#x20;

# Restarting a Project

Often sampling is done at the start of a project, or multiple pieces (such as towels) may be woven on one warp.  A quick way to reset the starting weave sequence to 1 as well as zero out the pick and interval counters and timers is to use the "Reset Progress" option on the Project Progress screen.  Click the yellow button to reset.


# Using the Keypad

There are a few places in TempoTreadle where you can change a number value. To change a value, select the field by pressing in the rectangular box; this results in a keypad to pop-up (shown below). The current value of the selected field shows at the bottom (in this example, 430). Pressing the delete key (“DEL”) will start removing digits from the right and pressing a number adds a number. For example, if you press “DEL” once followed by “5”, the number will change to 435. Once you have the value you want, press Enter “ENT” to save the value and return.

If you have a table loom and are weaving with a WIF with over 8 shafts, you may need to use the Table2 weave screen. Depending on your WIF, and how many levers are pressed at any one time, there may not be enough room to display all the shafts on the prior, current and next pick on the regular Weave Screen.

To change to use the Table2 screen to accommodate more shafts, go into Project Settings | Loom Action and press to change to select Table 2.

In this mode, you do not see the prior and next picks. An example is shown below.

The circle at the top of the screen shows the color of the weft pick (light tan in this example). The sequence (weft pick) is shown at the top (in this case, the first weft pick, sequence 1, is shown.

Levers needed for the current pick are highlighted in blue, correct levers detected are green, any incorrect levers detected are red. The pick will advance only when all the correct levers, and only those levers are detected. As with weaving in Table Loom mode, an "ok" beep will sound when all the levers are correct and the next pick will be automatically shown.

Also as with Table Loom mode, when taking a break from weaving, put all the levers in neutral and press the Home Icon.

# Beyond the Basics


# File Types on the SD Card

Once TempoTreadle loads a WIF file, it creates two additional files with the same name and different file extensions.&#x20;

For example, if you have a WIF file (scarf.wif) on your SD card, the first time it is loaded, TempoTreadle will create two additional files; scarf.ttc and scarf.ini.    The file with the TTC extension is a cache file that optimizes the WIF for faster loading. The file with the ".ini" file has configuration information that you have configured for your project such as the loom configuration and treadle settings.

These additional files with the "TTC" and "INI" extensions do not appear under Project Load.   Only WIF files appear under project load.&#x20;

*If using TempoWeave, there is no need to save the ".TWA" (TempoWeave Assembly file) onto your micro-sd card.  If you save it there, it will be ignored.*

*If you use the export for TempoTreadle function from TempoWeave, the cache file will be automatically be generated and saved along with the WIF card to eliminate the slower initial load.*

Another file on your card, SETTINGS.INI, hold information for system settings, such as Volume.  If you use a micro-sd card not supplied by LoftyFiber, upon the first usage TempoTreadle will create this file for you.

Once ready to delete old projects from the SD card (using your computer), the "INI" and "TTC" configuration files may also be deleted.&#x20;

# Formatting a MicroSD Card

The provided MicroSD card is already formatted.  In the event you need to format another card, here are instructions.

Here are step-by-step instructions for formatting an SD card with FAT32 on a Windows 10 PC:

Please note that formatting will erase all data on the SD card, so make sure to back up any important files before proceeding.

Step 1: Insert the SD card

* Insert the SD card into the SD card slot on your computer or use an SD card adapter to connect it to your PC via a USB port.

Step 2: Open File Explorer

* Press the "Windows + E" keys on your keyboard to open File Explorer. Alternatively, you can click on the folder icon in the taskbar.

Step 3: Locate the SD card

* In the left pane of File Explorer, under "This PC" or "Computer," you should see the list of drives. Look for your SD card, which will likely be labeled with the SD card's capacity (e.g., "Removable Disk (E:)").

Step 4: Backup any important data (optional)

* If you have any essential files on the SD card, copy them to your computer or an external storage device to back them up.

Step 5: Format the SD card

* Right-click on the SD card's drive letter (e.g., "E:") and select "Format..." from the context menu. A new window labeled "Format Removable Disk" will appear.

Step 6: Choose file system and allocation unit size

* In the "Format Removable Disk" window, choose "FAT32" from the "File system" drop-down menu. FAT32 is compatible with most devices, including cameras, smartphones, and game consoles.
* You can leave the "Allocation unit size" at its default setting. Windows will automatically determine the appropriate size.

Step 7: Provide a volume label (optional)

* You can give your SD card a name by typing a label into the "Volume label" field. This step is optional.

Step 8: Quick Format or not

* If you want a faster format process, check the "Quick Format" option. If you want a more thorough format that may take longer but ensures a more complete data wipe, leave it unchecked.

Step 9: Start the formatting process

* Double-check all your settings to ensure they are correct.
* Click on the "Start" button to begin the formatting process.

Step 10: Confirm the formatting

* A warning message will appear, informing you that formatting will erase all data on the SD card. If you're sure you want to proceed, click "OK."

Step 11: Wait for the process to complete

* The formatting process may take a few moments to complete, depending on the size of your SD card.

Step 12: Format complete

* Once the formatting process finishes, a message will appear stating that the format was successful.

Step 13: Safely eject the SD card

* Before removing the SD card, it's best to right-click on its drive letter and select "Eject" from the context menu to safely eject the SD card.

Your SD card is now formatted with the FAT32 file system and is ready for use with TempoTreadle


# System Settings - Error and other Tones

#### System Settings | OK Tone <a href="#system-settings-or-ok-tone" id="system-settings-or-ok-tone"></a>

The OK Tone Status option allows you to turn the audible notification on or off when the correct treadles are detected. By default, TempoTreadle is shipped with the Status set to “ON”. It is recommended to have the OK tone set “ON” when first using TempoTreadle until you are certain that it is aligned properly.

#### System Settings | Error Tone <a href="#system-settings-or-error-tone" id="system-settings-or-error-tone"></a>

It is possible to turn the audible notification for treadling errors off by changing the status field to “OFF”.

#### System Settings | Color Tone <a href="#system-settings-or-color-tone" id="system-settings-or-color-tone"></a>

Similar to the OK and Error tones, any Color change audible notifications can be turned off with this setting.

Note that there is also the capability to turn color alerts off on individual treadles in a project (see [Project Setup|Treadle Array](applewebdata://9CA626EC-2029-4CAF-95DB-9F050FDB0626#_Project_Setup_|_1) . If you never want to hear any color change tones, it is easier to set it off here, rather than on each treadle.

# Tune Array - Aligning the Sensor Array

#### System Settings | Tune Array <a href="#system-settings-or-tune-array" id="system-settings-or-tune-array"></a>

A setup utility is included to make it easier to test all the treadles for alignment. A continuous series of quick beeps sounds the entire time a treadle is detected, unlike with ok or error beeps. The continuous sound assists you in making any adjustments to the position of the sensor, since if it’s quiet, it’s not sensing!

*When using Tune Array, it’s important to observe whether a project or loom profile is loaded. If a project or loom profile is loaded, the name will show in the blue bar at the top of the screen. If the Treadle Settings for the currently loaded Project has disabled treadles, those treadles will not detect in Treadle Tuning. Also, if treadle positions have been remapped, the mapped treadle number will show, not the physical treadle position.*

*To test all the treadle positions and eliminate any treadle mapping, the Micro-SD card can be removed and the System Unit repowered. Then all physical positions can be aligned. Any treadles not tied up will likely detect as they sit on the array.*

When the Tune Array menu option is first opened, any detected treadle will be displayed. Notice the red letters on the picture above that read “Any Treadle”. With this setting, you can press treadles or levers and see if they detect.

On Tune Array, the green arrows can be pressed to isolate one treadle at a time. The first time you press the down arrow, the red letters will change to “Treadle 1”, meaning that now only Treadle 1 will be tested, ignoring any other treadles that may be depressed. This feature is helpful to isolate a single treadle if your tie-up is causing other treadles to depress and you want to focus on aligning only one treadle.

You can continue to press the down or up arrow to select other individual treadles for testing, or to go back to “Any Treadle”.

Remember that If a treadle is not detecting, or is intermittently being detected, you need to slightly move the magnets such that the detecting is 100% accurate when the treadle is depressed. On most floor looms, the setup instructions will recommend that the treadle be tuned to detect when about 1/2 to 2/3 down through the treadling. Also on most floor looms, moving the magnet closer to the front of the loom will increase sensitivity.

Once the basic alignment is finished, you may need to do some fine tuning once you start weaving your first warp.

While weaving, if you are experiencing trouble with a treadle, you can safely press the home key (your progress will be saved) and go into Tune Array and do any testing and adjustment. When finished, go to the home screen and select Weave to continue with your weaving.

When weaving on a floor loom, if a treadle's detection is marginal, the symptom may be the treadle detects, loses the detecting and detects again, causing an error beep the second time it "sees" the treadle. Typically this can be remedied by moving the magnet closer to the front of the loom.

The opposite situation is that he treadle is detecting too quickly; when weaving observe the treadles in gold under the 3 weft picks. If a treadle shows or flashes that is not going down, then the magnet may need to be moved further back on the treadle.

If most of the treadles are not detecting properly, be sure to check the left-right adjustment of the array. Do this by first aligning the first and last treadles, and move the array left or right if necessary.

# Troubleshooting FAQs

**Why is my TempoTreadle not advancing when I’m weaving?**

Are numbers in gold showing under your weaving sequences that aren’t expected? If they aren’t the correct treadles (or levers for table loom) as expected by the current pick, then TempoTreadle will not advance.

Is your TempoTreadle in "Free" Weave mode? If so, press the weave mode button until "WEAV" shows in blue.

If the treadle numbers showing in gold are not the ones that are actually down, check the treadle mapping under Project Setup.

It is possible for an error in the actual tie-up on the loom to cause a problem; if the tie-up in the WIF (as seen in Project Settings) doesn't match what is tied up on the loom, additional treadles may go down and cause TempoTreadle not to advance.

If the treadles that are pressed are not showing up, go through the tuning process for those treadles. Similarly if treadles are showing that aren't press, they may be sensitive. Usually the correction in tuning is to move the magnet slightly. See your loom setup instructions for more details.

**Why is my TempoTreadle not making an error sound?**

Are you weaving in Table Loom mode? If so, you never hear an error tone, only an “ok” tone when all the treadles (or levers) are correct.

Is your volume turned up enough to hear? Check system settings, volume.

**Why is my TempoTreadle screen not coming on?**

Is the cable providing power attached plugged into the top of the TempoTreadle?

If running on battery, is the battery charged? Also, some batteries have a button to “wake the battery" that needs to be pressed.

**Why don’t I see the WIF that is saved on my micro-sd card?**

Is the name of the WIF too long? On TempoTreadle II, if the maximum file name characters exceeds 22, the file will not display.

Is the file on the card a WIF file. The weave design must have an extension of .WIF. Files that are TWA, DTX, etc. are not read by TempoTreadle.

Is the WIF file in a subfolder on the micro-sd card? Weave designs on the SD card cannot be accessed from folders.

If you have several WIF files, you may need to press the green down arrow.

**Why am I hearing beeps when I haven’t pressed the wrong treadle?**

· Go into tune array and press the treadle sequences where the issue was happening. Look carefully at what is detecting, and when it detects as you depress each treadle. For example, if you press Treadle 4, it should detect as you press the treadle, but not too soon (when you first rest your foot on the treadle) and not too late (when it’s all the way down). For most looms, the sweet spot is to detect about ½ or 2/3 of the way down.

· Check that the tie-up on your loom is consistent with the tie-up in your WIF. TempoTreadle can catch tie-up mistakes in some situations.

**Why is my TempoTreadle making a lot of bad noises when I press weave?**

Look at what is showing under the pick sequence. Treadles showing in gold that are not expected will cause error sounds. If some of your treadles are not tied up, be sure to turn them off (see If treadles are detecting that are not down,

**My table loom is only showing one lever at a time**

·Check to see if you remembered to convert your WIF to a liftplan before copying to the SD card.

**My design does not show any weaving picks, just one blank entry**

Remove the SD card; delete the files from the SD card for your project. Recopy your design (or use the export function from TempoTreadle). Files can become corrupted in certain situations, especially when turning TempoTreadle off before pressing the home screen.

**TempoTreadle is advancing slowly to the next pick**

If you sense a delay in advancing to the next pick while weaving, this could be due to the treadle being too sensitive. For example, if you weave a pick, lift your foot and you sense a delay in the "ok" beep, it could be that the treadle continues to detect when it's almost completely released. Usually moving the magnet slightly back on the treadle so that the treadle later as you start to press will solve this issue.

* Jane Loom (Louët) – Uses a **metal ratchet and pawl system**, which provides **very precise control of tension** and holds adjustments firmly in place.
* **Ashford Looms** – Use a **nylon ratchet and round tension knob**.\
  Some weavers find the small round knob difficult to grip, especially under high tension.
* **Ashford “Handi Handle”** – A wooden accessory that **fits over the nylon knob**, giving the weaver more leverage. This makes adjusting tension **easier and more ergonomic**, especially for long warps or tighter setts.

Again, Jane offers the same functional features and is also available in all variants.

**Bottom line:**

# So, you are interested in a Jane loom?

The Louët Jane loom is one of the best table looms on the market today. It is packed with features and highly portable.

Most weavers look for a compact, easy-to-transport table loom for workshops or guild events—and it must weave well, operate reliably, and handle a wide range of weave structures. The Jane checks all of these boxes and more.

The Jane is also ideal for weavers with limited space, whether in a city apartment or a busy family home. Add a floor stand, and your Jane becomes even more versatile.

The Jane has quickly become one of the most popular table looms available.

Here is a summary of the main features of the Jane loom:

**Large shed** – The shed on a Jane loom is 2–2.5", which is excellent for a table loom.

**Metal ratchet** – A major advantage. This metal ratchet-and-pawl system has been used on Louët looms for more than 35 years. It is well proven, holds strong tension, doesn’t slip, and rarely wears out. If needed, the pawl can be replaced for just a few dollars.

**Folds flat** – The folding mechanism is ingenious. By removing two locking knobs and loosening the warp-beam ratchet, the loom folds flat to a height of 8 inches. Lock the ratchet again and use the same two knobs to secure the loom in its folded position. And all of this can be done **with the warp still on the loom**. Check out the video below from Louët .

**Beater lock** - the Jane's overhead beater has a natural rest position that actually reduces your weaving area.    Louët  has built in a click lock system so you can push the beater out of the way and lock it to maximize your weaving area.   This entire motion becomes a natural and fluid part of your weaving rhythm.

**Toggle positive lock position** - The Jane's toggles travel 200 degrees, thus once they are pulled fully down, the rest position is past 180 degrees giving the toggle a positive lock position.  This is important for the Jane as each shafts elastic is constantly pulling on the shaft to come back down to its rest position.  This means every toggle has to be tipped past the 180-degree (fully down) position, before the elastic force will pull the shaft back to its rest (closed) position.

**Shafts that snap down** - Further to the point above, the elastics on each shaft snap the shafts back down to their rest position.  Shafts can stick partially up ensuring a clean shed on every pick.

**Carry Handle and Feet to rest on** - Louët has added a carry handle to the 50cm model.   As well as rubber stoppers or "feet" to the side of the loom so that the loom can be stood up on its side.  The Carry handle is only on the 50cm model because the 70 and 90 cm models simply rest too high to be able to carry these models in the same way.

**Built in Raddle and Shelf** - The Louët raddle is built in to all Louët looms, including the Jane.  There is also a handy shelf ontop of the castle.   A double sided shelf appears on the 16 shaft Jane models.

# Louët Jane loom models

The Jane loom was first introduced in 2008.   At that time, it came as either a 40 cm (15.5") or 70 cm (27.5") weaving width.

in Approximately 2019, the Jane 50 (19.5") was added due to high demand.

In 2024, Louët added a 16 shaft model and quickly made the 8 shaft model expandable to 16 shafts at a later date.

The original 8 shaft only model is now sold out and no longer available.

Louët offers the Jane 50, Jane 70 and a Jane 90.  All in 8 shafts (expandable to 16 shafts) or directly as 16 shafts.

So in 2025, there are 6 models of Jane loom available to purchase.

# Troubleshooting the Jane loom

**Shaft cord knot** - One of the most common mistakes when assembling the Jane loom is making an incorrect knot when connecting the shaft cord to the shaft end.   The result will be a knot that slips and Shafts that slip downward with use, which results in a poor shed. Here is a link to Louët 's Support article and a short video to help.

**Optimal Shaft Height** - This got a little trickier when Louet released their shuttle race.   With the shuttle race attached, the original loom is too low to a table to allow it to fold correctly.   Louet solved this by making the legs longer on all Jane looms.   However, the manual still said to set the shaft height to 22.5cm from the table.

That height doesn't work.

The recommendation is to set the shafts just above the bottom rollers.  If shafts are too high, you will reduce your **shed size**.


# My beater is not centered?

The design of the Louët Jane beater leaves it to be easily bent or torqued out of center.  This can happen over time or accidently without even knowing.

If your beater is out of center, closer to one side of your loom than the other, or touching one side of your loom, try this fix.

It is a simple fix.    With warp on or off, lift your beater so it is parallel to the table and torque your beater in the direction needed.  (if the beater is practically touching the left side, torque the beater to the right)

# Louet Jane Loom - Race and Shuttle Hints

The Louet Race is a big help for throwing the shuttle on the Jane table looms.  However there are some considerations.

When all the levers are up (closed shed), the **race** should be positioned so the warp threads just touch — or come very close to touching — the race.

On Jane 16-shaft looms, it’s common to have the race set in the *highest* position so that the threads only just graze the race.

If you can’t get the warp ends close to the race when at rest, check the following:

1. Make sure the warp tension is not overly tight.
2. Adjust the shafts according to the Jane assembly instructions or video.

The race limits how far you can weave before advancing the warp. After advancing, we aim to have the fell line about 5 inches from the edge of the front beam. If it is set any farther back, the race pushes against the cloth, making it difficult or impossible to beat the weft into place.   After weaving has progressed to about 7-inches from the edge of the front beam, the warp needs to be advanced.

When a shed is opened, the lower threads will raise slightly.  The distance from the race will vary depending on the where the fell line falls.  The picture below shows the threads a little higher than best case, so it's time to advance the warp.  Note there is a floating selvage at the edge.

The shuttle is shown entering the shed that was shown on the prior picture.  The shuttle pushes down the lower threads as it slides across the race; the tip of the shuttle is higher than the lowest threads, and the bottom is sloped such that any threads on the bottom shed are pressed down.  For wide warps, the shuttle can be thrown safely across the race.

The Flying Dutchman and Schacht 11-inch Slim shuttles work well for us on the 16-shaft Jane with the race.   However, when testing with the Schacht Mini Boat Shuttle, we found it did not work well.&#x20;

Some shuttles may not be suitable for weaving on a table loom with a race.  For example, very light shuttles, or those where the point on the end sits low enough to capture threads that aren't sitting flat, are not good candidates.  In the following picture, a light weight shuttle isn't heavy enough to pull down the lower warp threads on this warp.&#x20;

# So, you are interested in a Louët David 3 loom?

Everything you need to know to make an informed purchasing decision

The David 3 loom is an 8-shaft sinking jack loom. This means the shafts are pulled **downward** rather than lifted upward. There is a specific difference in tie-up for this type of loom, but we will cover that later in these articles.

**Why choose a David 3 loom?**

The David and Spring looms share the same frame structure. In fact, the beater system, breast beam, warp and cloth beams, the entire back-beam assembly, the brake drum and handle, and the footrail are all interchangeable between these looms.

The unique feature of the David loom is the **cam and spring system** built into the castle of every David model. The cam is a mechanical device that assists in holding your shed open—a significant advantage for a jack loom and a major ergonomic benefit for the David.

On a traditional jack loom, you pull all shafts in one direction—typically upwards. As you lift the shafts, you stretch the warp threads vertically to form the shed. Physics tells us that the higher the shafts are lifted, the more the warp is stretched and the more force is required. The required force increases exponentially as you press the treadle deeper. You are also lifting the weight of the shafts and heddles. Holding a shed open on most jack looms can be heavy work—great for your legs, but tough on knees and hips.

On the David loom, when you begin pressing a treadle, you are still stretching your yarn and extending the spring attached to each shaft under the shelf. However, about halfway through the treadle stroke, the **cam “tips over”** and its mechanical advantage begins supporting the forces needed to hold the shed open. This means the **last half of the treadle stroke is easy**, and holding the shed open requires very little effort—you are no longer bearing the full weight of the system.

While the initial push of each treadle is not what we would call “light,” the overall treadling experience on a David loom *is* light when you consider the full motion.

In short, the choice of a David 3 loom comes down to **ergonomics**, **engineering**, **efficient use of space**, and a **lower price point** compared to the Spring—delivering a lot of loom in a compact footprint.

# Comparing a Spring 2 and David 3

This is often where most people arrive when choosing between Louët floor looms:\
**The Spring or the David?**\
Why choose one over the other?

As previously noted, these two looms share much of the same structure and frame. The back beam, beater, warp and cloth beams, and brake system are all identical between the David and the Spring.

In our opinion, the differences come down to:

* Price
* Number of shafts
* Tie-ups
* The weight and feel of treadling

The David loom is less expensive than the Spring—that is simply a fact. The Spring offers up to 12 shafts, while the David maxes out at 8.

The countermarch system of the Spring requires tying **every shaft to every treadle**. The David, being a jack loom (with a sinking jack style), requires tie-ups only for the shafts that need to be lifted or lowered. In general, this means the David requires **approximately half as many tie-ups** as the Spring.

The weight and feel of treadling is difficult to convey in words—you really need to experience it.\
But here is an attempt:

Imagine stretching the spring on a screen door—though lighter than that, it gives you a reference. On the David, each treadle is connected to one of these springs, so when you press a treadle, you begin by stretching that spring.

On the Spring loom, you are only moving the weight of the shafts, assisted by cords running over ball-bearing pulleys. There is very little resistance.

Treadling on the Spring is lighter. However, as mentioned earlier, treadling on the David is **not heavy**—just different.

# Difference between David 1, 2 and 3

The David 1 was the original David loom—compact in size yet packed with advanced features. Named *David* after the biblical tale of David and Goliath, the loom embodies the idea of being small but mighty.

The only difference between the David 1 and David 2 is the beater.

* The **David 1** featured an overhead beater.
* The **David 2** introduced a sliding beater, which also incorporated a popular shuttle race.

The **David 3** redesigned the beater once more, moving to a floor-hinged system. Its construction and frame size were updated, making the David 3 heavier and sturdier than its predecessors.

# David Loom sizes and shipping details

The David loom is available in 70 cm (27.5"), 90cm (35.5”) or 110cm (43.5”) weaving widths.  They are referred to as David 70, David 90 or David 110.    The David comes with 8 shafts only.

**Assembled dimensions:**

David 70: 104 x 87 x120 cm, (40 7/8 x 34 ¼ 1/4” x 47”)

David 90: 124 x 87 x120 cm, (48 1/2” x 34 ¼ 1/4” x 47”)

David 110: 144 x 87 x120 cm, (57” x 34 ¼ 1/4” x 47” )

**Assembled weights:**

David 70: 40 kg (88 lb)

David 90:  44 kg (98 lb)

The David loom ships in 3 boxes&#x20;

**Box A** is heavy at 45lbs and contains most of wood frame sides and all hardware bags.   It’s shipping dimensions are approximately 40” x 12” x 5”&#x20;

**Box B** is the castle and is the largest box at 36” x 12” x 10” for the 70cm model, 43” x 12” x 10” for the 90cm model and 52” x 12” x 10” for the 110 cm model.  Shipping weights are 34-40lb, depending on 70/90/110 width.&#x20;

**Box C** contains the width dependent wooden parts – warp beam, breast beam, etc.   Shipping weight is between 30-40 lb. and dimension is 53” x 12” x 5”&#x20;

The David 3 breast beam is 29 1/4" from the floor to the bottom of the beam.

The David loom is very quiet to operate, due to the light weight texsolv heddles.  The David loom has been on the market since the 1990’s and the mechanics and function of the David loom has never changed.  In 2018, the David 3 was introduced adding some structural improvements, weight and frame stability, but most of the improvements were made for improved manufacturing efficiency.  &#x20;

Your David will come standard with the following:

* 2 apron rods (wooden)
* 800 heddles - 280mm (11")

* 40-10 metric reed (approx. equivalent to a 10 dent reed)

The David loom can fold to a width of 29"   The back beam section is hinged so it can fold up to the castle.  With the David 1 & 2, there was a bolt that tightened the back beam section to the castle.   The bolt had to be removed when folding the loom and too often owners lost these bolts when the loom was stored away for a period of time.

The David 3, in redesign, was changed to have an embedded nut and bolt system that is never removed, so no fear of losing hardware.

The tie up cords are 16cm long and should have exactly 11 loops.   Always use the last useable loop on each end - one end slides over the lam and the other end slips over the screw head on the treadle.

# David harness adjustments

The David loom assembly requires that you adjust and set your harness heights yourself. Louët provides fixed height positions for shafts 1 and 8, and the remaining shafts must slope evenly between them.

All Texsolv cords used to attach your shaft bars are carefully measured and installed at the factory. Always attach the shaft bars to the **last usable loop** of each Texsolv cord. This is important—using any other loop will make it much more difficult to achieve correct shaft heights.\

If you are experiencing a split shed—where some warp threads sit slightly higher or lower than the rest—you will need to adjust your harness heights, most likely between shafts 2–7.

Shaft heights are adjusted at the lam, where the Texsolv cord connects to an eye bolt secured with two nuts. Only the **lower nut** is functionally required; the **upper nut** is used only for shipping. Louët sets an approximate starting position using a jig so that most shafts begin close to the correct height.

Bottom shaft bars must always be attached to the **last usable loop**. Do not attempt to adjust shaft height by moving the shaft bar to the second or third usable loop.

**How to adjust harness height** – Loosen the top nut so it is out of the way. Raise or lower the bottom nut to adjust the height.

* Lowering the nut lowers the shaft bar
* Raising the nut raises the shaft bar

Adjust each shaft so it follows the correct, even slope from back to front.

This process can be tedious but getting it right the first time will save significant frustration later. Attention to detail is essential at this stage.

# Moving the Horizontal Treadle stop Bar

The official position of Louët is that physical modifications to the Louët David 3 are neither necessary nor recommended.

A YouTube video is currently circulating that suggests drilling new holes in the loom and relocating the horizontal lower treadle stop bar. We strongly advise against making these modifications.

The issue shown in the video is a *split shed*. A split shed occurs when the upper shed is uneven, causing some upper warp threads to sit at different heights than others. The image below shows an example of a clean, properly adjusted David 3 shed.

If your loom is not producing a clean shed like this, the correct solution is to adjust the shaft heights. Proper shaft adjustment is the only recommended method for achieving a large, clean shed on a David 3.

Before making any shaft height adjustments:

* All shafts must be tied to at least one treadle
* The treadles should be tied using the last usable hole of the Texsolv tie-up cord

If you do not begin with this setup, you will not achieve the maximum possible shed.

We recommend beginning with a simple tabby (plain weave) tie-up:

* One treadle tied to shafts 1, 3, 5, and 7
* One treadle tied to shafts 2, 4, 6, and 8

Once tied up:

* Shaft 1 should be adjusted to 8 cm below the bottom of the castle on both the left and right sides
* Shaft 8 should be adjusted to 6 cm below the bottom of the castle on both sides

The remaining shafts should slope evenly between shafts 1 and 8. Any remaining shed unevenness can typically be corrected by fine-tuning the height progression of shafts 2 through 7.

The David assembly instructions also include parts lists with part numbers.   It can often be difficult to describe a missing part accurately, but using the specific terminology and part numbers provided by Louët makes ordering replacement parts much easier for everyone.

# David 3 - sticking shaft

With the David 3, some weave structures where you are lifting 6 against 2 shafts, for example, you may find that 1 or more of the shafts that should not lower, get pulled down anyway.   There are a couple reasons why this may happen

First, look very closely for a heddle that has been split between two shafts, or a heddle that fell off the end of a shaft bar and is getting caught as you raise and lower shafts.   If this is the problem, cutting away the offending heddle is the simplest solution.

If this is not the issue, try this next solution

Remove the shelf and expose the cams and springs.  You are going to disconnect a spring from the cam texsolv cord and re-attach closer to the cam.    you are basically shortening the connection point of the spring to the cord.    Make sure you don't let go of that cord as it will want to pull away.

**Bench -** The Louët loom bench is 22.5" tall and is not adjustable.  It is simply a well sized loom bench, with no added attachments or functionality.   It is the Louët recommended bench for the Spring, David and Jane looms.

**Sectional warping kit** - This is an attachment to your main warp beam.   The kit contains for wooden slats that screw onto your beam.  You also get metal clips that fit into the pre-drilled holes of the slats.   These clips are spaced every inch or leave out every other clip, and you have 2-inch sections.  This product is common for The Spring 2, David 3, Megado and Octado looms.

**2nd Warp beam** - The 2nd warpbeam fits below the main beam of the back beam section.  You can see the image below showing the beam in place.   The ratchet brake system has a manual release so you will have to get up and release the brake on each warp advance.

**Leg Extension/Lift Kit** - The David 3 and Spring 2 share a kit that is designed to help a weaver with tie ups.    It lifts the loom 12" off the floor so that you can sit on a small stool to do your tie ups, instead of crawling on the floor.    The kit does require some assistance in that you must lift the loom, one side at a time, in order to attach the legs.

The image below is of the Spring 2 loom, but it fits on the David 3 as well.

# Warping the David loom

# Warping tips for the David 3

When winding your warp, you need to release the brake tension.    You can do this by unscrewing the brake tension nut. (Image shown is the Spring 2, however, the brake system on the David 3 is the same.)

If this does not release your brake sufficiently or if you do not want to mess with the tension nut, here is another way.

Take a piece of texsolv cord and a texsolv peg.   Put the end of the cord through the last loop and put  the peg through an end loop so you have created a solid large loop.

Place the loop over the brake and also over the top of the castle frame.   Adjust the loop size so that it hold the brake up sufficiently to release the brake.  Keep a little tension on the warp beam so that the beam does not unwind while you are winfing on your warp.

Remove your cloth beam, beater and breast beam during threading.   This allows you to get inside your loom, nice and close to the castle.
