# Weaving Design

Designing cloth for weaving involves selection of warp and weft thread, a weave structure (e.g. plain weave, twill, satin), and color. The weave structure will guide the number of shafts required.

The density of the warp and weft is an important decision. Density (sett) for warp is usually measured in warp ends per inch or centimeter. Density for weft is picks per inch or centimeter, where a pick means each placement of a weft yarn in the shed (the opening resulting from shafts going up or down.

See the section on [understanding sett](/weaving-how-to/understanding-sett-sleying-reeds-and-raddles.md) for more information.

LoftyFiber's TempoWeave design software helps with all aspects of weaving design, including project planning, visualization, color, structure and yardage calculations.
