Before you start

  • Measure your and center your warp on your heddle (see the previous video)

  • Measure the distance for your warp from the back apron rod to the warping peg.

  • Gather your materials

    • Warp yarn

    • Heddle hook

    • Scissors

    • Warp packing materials

Key Parts of the Loom

  • Warp- the length of your project. Also the act of putting a warp on the room

  • Back Apron Rod- the thin bar at the back of the loom that is attached to the thicker warp beam

  • Apron Ties- the part that connects the apron rods to the cloth and warp beam; the appearance of these depends on the loom manufacturer: Schacht uses removable Texsolv, Ashford uses fixed nylon, and some manufacturers use string

  • Warp Beam- the thick bar at the back of the loom that the apron rod is connected to and around which the warp is wound

  • Rachet Assembly- the knobs at the side of the loom that rotates the warp beam and the cloth beam; depending on the size and manufacturer of the loom, there may be one on each side

  • Heddle- the removable part of the loom that acts in the same way as the reed (holding the warp ends evenly spaced while you weave) and the heddles (holding the warp ends in order) of a multi-shaft loom
